Open Call

Open Call: A Thousand Words

Deadline: Sunday 13th August

There are two categories to apply for with this open call. If you wish to apply for both, send it as one email but state your intention to apply for both categories.

The exhibition will be an exploration of the relationship between language, image and art. If chosen, you will be asked to produce a new work in response to the phrase "a picture is worth a thousand words", dealing with issues surrounding text in art, the limitations of image and of language in art, and the relationships between them.

The exhibition will take place in October at The Great Medical Disaster, a Castlefield Gallery New Art Space in Manchester city centre.

To apply please submit the following:

  • A statement about your work
  • A very short statement about what your initial ideas for the project may be, however we are definitely not looking for refined, finalised ideas at this stage.
  • A link to your website

Self-published fair:

During the exhibition we will be holding a curated artist self-published fair. This will coincide with Manchester Contemporary art fair which will be taking place around the corner.

We are looking for books/zines/anything self-published as an art related venture to include in the fair. Once all submissions are made we will curate submissions and choose those we feel suit the concepts of the exhibition. If selected you will either need to post us copies of your work, or be present on the day to sell your work. We will take a small commission for work sold (the exact amount is yet to be decided).

To apply please submit the following:

  • Photos/excepts from the publication you wish to sell
  • A link to your website

Email all submissions to, with the heading 1000 Words (exhibition/self-publishing)
